FCS in English

The Finnish Clavichord Society was founded in 1999, with the purpose of promoting the clavichord and its music in Finland. The Society functions as a link between musicians, instrument builders and aficionados of the clavichord.

Today there are close to 100 clavichords in Finland and the number is rising. Beginning in 1985 Finnish musicians and many enthusiasts started constructing their own instruments, first at the workshops of Marholmen in Sweden, and in Finland since 1994 in Kuopio and at Tetrimäki. Naturally, the selection also comprises clavichords constructed by professional builders.
Clavichord playing is instructed at the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki as well as in its Kuopio department, were teaching was initiated in the 1980's. Clavichord playing can also be studied at the Conservatories of Kuopio and Oulu. Besides the usual fretted and unfretted types of clavichords being used in Kuopio and Helsinki, the Academy also possesses pedal clavichords with either independent or pull-down pedals. Also many Finnish organists, harpsichordists and piano pedagogues have explored the clavichord in their practise of early music.

The Finnish Clavichord Society organizes concerts and other events pertaining to the clavichord. The society also publishes a newsletter and furthers contacts with other clavichord and early keyboard societies.

The Finnish Clavichord Society is a registered non-profit organization.
